What you most likely don’t know is that some built-in macOS apps tend to create additional copies of their own. Relatable, isn’t it? Been there, done that. It is only a matter of time and your drive’s capacity until the alarm bell goes off and you are backed into a corner having to cope with the lack of space on your computer.Ĭasually using your Mac, you will sometimes be downloading multiple copies of the same thing from the Internet, your Dropbox, or email inbox (that attachment you are downloading because you can’t remember where you saved it). Duplicate documents, archives, media files (music, photos, videos) is something you will end up having to deal with one way or the other. It is just inevasible, regardless, whether you are using your Mac for work, study, or browsing cute cat pictures on Facebook. Let’s put this straight, you will accumulate duplicates. Most Don’t Realize That Duplicates Exist on Their Macs On a side note, if you are intentionally storing multiple backup copies of files containing sensitive data, they are best manually deleted using file shredding software on Mac. Needless to say that regularly removing such files from your computer is a must, especially if you intend to keep your Mac junk-free. Not to mention your backups take longer to run with all those additional files that take extra time and space on your Time Machine drive. It gives frustration a whole new definition when you are in a hurry and accidentally send an outdated file copy to your colleague, or attach an unedited picture just because you have managed to save the edited copy by the same name in a different folder. With multiple copies of the same files and folders, finding the right and most recent copy can become MacBook user’s living nightmare. Not only that duplicates take precious space on Apple’s notoriously small SSDs, they also tend to slow down your workflow. Some of you own an Apple computer with 1TB drives and you most probably couldn’t care less about a few gigs of file copies, however, those of you with 128GB (or even 256GB these days) base models need to take storage management seriously. If you are using your Mac on the daily, then stocking up on dupes (intentionally or accidentally) is inevitable. Nobody likes having multiple copies of the same thing on their computer, yet we all end up filling our Macs with duplicates at some point. the output of -help).Eliminating Duplicate Files: Why Is It Important This aspect can be controlled by the -xdims, -ydims, and -radiuses parameters (cf. Last, but not least, iterative deepening in the form of lower-resolution scanning is used to eliminate likely non-duplicates from the more costly higher-resolution scanning. The SciPy implementation was used as it supports parallelization via multiple threaded workers: The search for duplicates and near duplicates uses a radius query on a KD tree. Nevertheless, the approach described here was a great inspiration: Unfortunately, difPy could not be used as it does not integrate with the Photos database (minor nuisance regarding updating the database) and uses a quadratic algorithm that compares each image to all other images, i.e., N*(N-1) comparisons for N images. The approach used for scaling images is inspired by the approach taken in difPy. each set of original and duplicates is tagged with the UUID of the original and put in an album called photosdup-UUID.each time a duplicate is found, the higher-quality image (as judged by total file size) is tagged with the keyword photosdup-duplicate while the lower-quality duplicates are tagged with the keyword photosdup-original.The result of the scan is stored by photosdup in two ways: If the graphical user interface has stability problems, force single core code using 0 for the cores parameter. ![]()
